Nick has served clients for over 9 years as a registered patent attorney and has prepared over 200 patent applications. He specializes in preparing and prosecuting patent applications for mechanical inventions.

Nick has prepared patent applications for manufacturing processes, industrial systems, automotive components, military equipment, and consumer products, ranging from household goods to outdoor gear.

Prior to founding Hatch Patents, Nick worked as in-house counsel for Otter Products, LLC (maker of OtterBox and LifeProof-branded consumer products) in Fort Collins, Colorado where he prepared and prosecuted patent applications for mobile device accessories and evaluated patent portfolios for acquisition.

Before joining Otter Products, Nick worked at Steptoe & Johnson LLP, an international law firm in Washington, D.C. with more than 500 attorneys worldwide. At the firm, he focused on patent preparation, prosecution, and litigation. He worked on patent applications for solar modules, internal combustion engines, GPS-based tracking systems, and a variety of consumer products. He also assisted with patent litigation cases in various U.S. district courts and before the U.S. International Trade Commission.

During law school, Nick worked at PING, Inc., an American manufacturer of golf equipment based in Phoenix, Arizona. He assisted with patent applications for golf clubs and accessories and provided litigation support.

Prior to law school, Nick worked as an engineer at Ford Motor Company where he gained experience with engine technologies, including variable valve timing and after-treatment systems. While at Ford, he spent several months embedded at Ford Global Technologies, LLC, a subsidiary that manages and commercializes Ford’s patent portfolio. In that role, he was exposed to the patent process for the first time, an experience that changed the trajectory of his career from engineering to patent law.
