John is a fifth generation Coloradan. He married Mary Ann (Buss) Evans twenty seven years ago. They have two sons: Evan and John-Paul. John graduated from Lakewood High School in Lakewood, Colorado. He received a B.A. from the University of Denver, and an M.Ed. And Ph.D. from Georgia State University.  He received a law degree in 1986 from Valparaiso University School of Law. Since 2013, John serves as the principal attorney in Evans Legal Group, P.C.  This firm represents charter schools, agricultural clients, small corporations, trust and estate clients, probate, land use and special districts. In 1994 John was elected the at-large representative to the State Board of Education, and then in 1998 was elected to the Colorado State Senate. In the Colorado State Senate he has served as Assistant Majority Leader, Chair of Legal Services, and Vice-Chairs of the Finance and Health Committees. He also served on the Transportation Committee, and was a member of the Education Committee.  John has received numerous honors including the Phi Delta Kappa Leadership Award and Special Recognition by the Colorado Library Association.  As a Senator, he was honored as Legislator of the Year by the National Fuels Industry and twice United Veterans Committee of Colorado for his amendment to the Colorado Constitution establishing the property tax exemption for disabled military veterans.
