Position Summary:

Metro Volunteer Lawyers (MVL)’s mission is to bridge the gap in access to justice by coordinating the provision of pro bono legal services by volunteer lawyers within the Denver Metro Area to people who could not otherwise afford legal services for their civil legal issues. MVL serves applicants in the Denver metro areas including Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Douglas, Elbert & Jefferson, and Gilpin counties.
Metro Volunteer Lawyers’ Family Law Court Program (“FLCP”) was created to address a high volume of uncomplicated, uncontested divorce or custody matters, where neither party is represented by an attorney. FLCP handles hundreds of cases each year.
The first stage of FLCP is Client Meetings, where applicants receive help completing all the legal documents to initiate their family law cases. The FLCP coordinator must inform clients about the program, explain certain family law concepts, outline the court process, and answer specific client questions. Following an initial program explanation, the FLCP Coordinator, along with the volunteers, assists clients in completing the necessary documents. Afterwards, the FLCP Coordinator files the cases with the court, effectuates service of process, sets hearings, and handles multiple procedural issues and tasks required throughout the case.
If a hearing is required, the client is represented by a volunteer attorney at a permanent orders hearing. The FLCP Coordinator must coordinate and manage clients and volunteers on these days and be ready to step in and take a case if necessary.
The FLCP Coordinator position requires superb organizational skills, as they manage clients, coordinate with attorneys, communicate with court staff, and manage interns. They also work closely with other Metro Volunteer Lawyers staff, transferring cases to other programs when necessary. Equally important, the FLCP Coordinator must have a strong commitment to public service and understand the complex challenges facing those in poverty. As this person is often the face of Metro Volunteer Lawyers, they must consistently portray the upmost professionalism on a daily basis.
