Appellate Pro Bono Program

Asian Pacific Development Center

The Asian Pacific Development Center provides a variety of human services to the Asian Pacific population in Colorado. They need volunteer attorneys who can assist clients with the following types of legal matters: Domestic Violence, Divorce, Child Custody, Immigration Issues (visas, removal issues, etc.), Civil Disputes (traffic accidents, violations, etc.), Work Injury and Worker’s Compensation Benefits, Social Security Benefits (SSI or SSDI related issues), Housing Discrimination, and Criminal Defense.

Colorado Lawyers Committee

Colorado Lawyers Committee”: CLC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan consortium of around 80 Denver-area law firms that do high impact pro bono work in five main areas of focus: children’s rights and education, civil rights and criminal law, poverty and public benefits, immigration, and community development. The Committee needs attorneys to advocate, negotiate, and litigate for children, indigent, and other disadvantaged communities..

Colorado Attorneys for the Arts (CAFTA)

CAFTA is a pro bono legal referral service, connecting creative entities to volunteer lawyers.

Colorado COVID Small Business Legal Program

This program, spearheaded by the Colorado Lawyers Committee, The Office of the Colorado Attorney General, The Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade and the law firms of WilmerHale and Davis Graham & Stubbs LLP, matches volunteer lawyers with small businesses impacted by the COVID-19 crisis and in need of legal advice. Volunteer lawyers receive periodic emails with details of the legal questions posed by a variety of small businesses, and elect to be matched with small businesses when they are able to provide representation. CLC Nonprofit Working Group

The nonprofit working group matches volunteer lawyers with Colorado nonprofits which apply for pro bono legal assistance. Volunteers with the nonprofit program will receive periodic emails (every 3-4 weeks) about nonprofits that need assistance on a range of issues:  contracts, bylaws, employment, taxes, etc.  Volunteers are matched with nonprofits when they are able to provide representation to the nonprofit (limited to the single issue).  NOTE:  volunteers must have their own malpractice insurance or be members of the Association of Corporate Counsel–Colorado Chapter.  To sign up, visit the Colorado Lawyers Committee website.

Disability Law Colorado

Disability Law Colorado’s primary goal is to open up the legal system to those who would otherwise be unable to voice their needs because of the complexity of the service bureaucracy, their disability, or because they are unable to act on their own behalf.

Nonpartisan Election Call Center

At the Nonpartisan Election Call Center, volunteers answer phone calls from Colorado voters on the hotline by providing voter information, documenting problems they encounter when voting, and working with partners and volunteers on the ground to identify and remove barriers to voting. Typical questions include, “Has my ballot been received?” “Where do I register?” and “Where can I drop off my ballot?” The Call Center, which is held every two years, is sponsored by Just Vote! Colorado Election

Protection, a nonpartisan voter assistance project and is not affiliated with or promoting any party, candidate or ballot issue. Just Vote is a coalition of several organizations: the Colorado Lawyers Committee, Colorado Common Cause, Mi Familia Vota, Disability Law Colorado, and the League of Women Voters of Colorado. The next Election Call Center will take place during early voting and on Election Day, November 3, 2020. ProBoPat

ProBoPat seeks to connect low income Colorado inventors with Colorado patent professionals for patent preparation and prosecution legal services on a pro bono or significantly reduced fee basis.

Rocky Mountain Children’s Law Center

The Rocky Mountain Children’s Law Center’s team of legal professionals and social workers work as a unit to make sure we consider the whole child in every decision and recommendation concerning the lives of abused, neglected and at-risk children. We have programs for traumatized youth, students, parents and caregivers, all geared toward providing children with a safe, nurturing and permanent home.

Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network

RMIAN is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing legal information and representation to non-citizens detained by the Department of Homeland Security and lacking access to legal counsel. RMIAN seeks volunteer attorneys to represent non-citizen men, women, and children in immigration removal proceedings. Each volunteer attorney will be provided with an experienced immigration practitioner to serve as a mentor for the case.

Rocky Mountain Victim Law Center

RMVLC is a non-profit organization that provides free legal representation for victims of violent crime in criminal cases aiding with enforcement of both Colorado and Federal Crime Victims' Rights Acts. RMVLC operates as independent legal counsel charged to protect the legal rights and best interests of the victim through a broad-based approach grounded in litigation, creative problem solving, and extensive knowledge of the judicial system.

Faculty of Federal Advocates

The Faculty of Federal Advocates is dedicated to improving the quality of legal practice in the United States District Court and the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Colorado.

Denver Legal Night

The Colorado Lawyers Committee seeks attorneys (and Spanish-speaking law students) to meet with clients, analyze the legal issues presented and provide limited legal representation or referrals (we have an extensive resource notebook).  You do not need expertise in a particular area of law to participate. El Centro Humanitario

ECH seeks attorneys for its wage claim program, Denver’s first day laborer organization that protects the rights of vulnerable day laborer populations through an employment program, a legal program, and other educational programs.

Elevation Community Land Trust (ECLT)
ECLT is a statewide non-profit that provides affordable homeownership opportunities through the community land trust (CLT) model.  Elevation seeks attorneys who can represent its homebuyers to explain the terms of the ECLT Land Lease prior to closing. Family Tree Women in Crisis

Family Tree serves victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. This organization needs attorneys for its free legal clinic in Jefferson County. The clinic deals with do-it-yourself divorce as well as custody issues. Family Tree is also looking for volunteer attorneys to take individual cases often involving post-decree issues.

Federal Pro Se Clinic

The Colorado Bar Association Federal Pro Se Clinic assists unrepresented litigants in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado.  The clinic helps to prepare complaints and responsive pleadings, provides assistance with other common pleadings, answers procedural questions, and explains legal concepts such as jurisdiction, venue, and service of process. Their focus is on civil procedure – navigating the court system, rather than substantive law.

Jefferson County Mediation Services

Jefferson County Mediation Services mediates small claims, domestic, protecting order, zoning violations, etc. Mediators required to have taken 40 hours mediation courses.

Justice and Mercy Legal Aid Center 

JAMLAC, a faith based program, provides free legal services to those who struggle with poverty, oppression, and daily hardships, especially focus on serving low-income victims of crime and domestic violence.

Metro Volunteer Lawyers

Attorneys needed to help low-income applicants in the Denver metro area (including Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Elbert and Jefferson counties). MVL is looking for volunteers to help people with probate, family law, bankruptcy, landlord tenant, housing, social security, and mediation services. Volunteers can take a full rep case or help out at a legal clinic for only a couple hours. 

Project Safeguard

Project Safeguard needs family law attorneys for domestic violence victims seeking permanent civil protection orders and dissolution of marriage or allocation of parental responsibilities. Project Safeguard provides all the appropriate forms.

Servicios de la Raza

This program offers counseling, safe housing, legal advocacy, and trial support to Hispanic/Latino victims of domestic violence; it also provides educational groups for adult and child/youth victims of domestic violence.

University of Denver Student Law Office

The DU Student Law Office offers legal help through multiple student-staffed clinics.

Larimer County Bar Association Pro Bono Program

The Pro Bono program needs attorneys to assist low-income individuals who are financially over-qualified for Colorado Legal Aid, but who are still within the federal poverty guidelines and unable to afford legal representation.

Mesa County Pro Bono Project

The Mesa County Pro Bono Project is a non-profit organization that assists indigent applicants with civil legal needs through referral to volunteer attorneys. Volunteer attorneys provide equal access to justice by advising or representing qualified residents in civil cases, and assisting with clinics and workshops. Pueblo County Bar Pro Bono Project

Volunteer attorneys participate in Lawyer Night, Ask-A-Lawyer, Clinics, and Radio-TV presentations on legal issues.

San Luis Valley Pro Bono Project

The Pro Bono project assists indigent applicants with civil legal needs through referral to volunteer attorneys. The pro bono project serves Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Mineral, Rio Grande, and Saguache counties. Southwest Bar Volunteer Legal Aid, Inc.

SWBVLA is located in the Durango office of Colorado Legal Services (CLS). There is an ongoing need for attorneys to provide advisory and direct client services in the areas of family, employment, consumer, housing, elder, public benefits, and probate law. SWBVLA serves La Plata, San Juan, and Archuleta counties as well as Southern Ute and Ute Mountain Ute reservations.

Uncompahgre Volunteer Legal Aid

UVLA refers pro bono cases in Montrose, Ouray, and San Miguel counties, as well as referring pro bono for senior citizens in Delta, Gunnison, and Hinsdale counties. It needs attorneys to provide ongoing consultations, representations, and mediations in civil matters for low-income eligible individuals.

University of Colorado Legal Aid and Defender Program

This program represents indigent clients who live in Boulder County or who must appear in Boulder County Courts.

Weld County Legal Services

Volunteer attorneys provide equal access to justice by representing qualified residents in civil cases at no charge, teaching monthly do-it-yourself divorce clinics, and staffing the Call-A-Lawyer hotline.
