The fully funded Cigna health plan features five coverage options designed to meet your specific needs. The plan will require no medical underwriting or health questions.  

 

The CBA has partnered with 1099 Workers to offer access to a comprehensive suite of benefits typically offered by traditional employers, supporting your professional and personal goals while preserving autonomy. Enrollment begins on the 1st of each month, with premium payments starting the following month, and coverage beginning the month thereafter.

INDIVIDUAL & SOLO HEALTH INSURANCE Q&A 

Monthly enrollment is available. Enroll on the first 1st of any month, pay the first premium payment the following month, and coverage begins the 1st of the month after the premium payment.

Example: Enroll March 1, first premium payment on April 1, coverage starts May 1.

1. What benefits can I enroll in? 

The Colorado Bar Association is now making available a health insurance plan exclusively for individuals & solo practitioners of the CBA. The fully funded Cigna health plan features five coverage options designed to meet your specific needs. The plan will require no medical underwriting or health questions. 

 

2. Am I required to be a CBA member to qualify for coverage? 

Yes, current membership in the CBA is required. The CBA is making this coverage available to our membership for those in the legal industry; you do not have to be an attorney or a judge to join. Please join or renew your membership to qualify.

3. When will my first payment be due? 

Your first payment will occur on the 1st and the 15th of the month following your completed enrollment. 

 

4. When do my medical benefits take effect? 

Coverage starts on the 1st of the month after your initial payment. For example, if you enroll on March 1st and your first payment is processed on April 1st, your benefits will begin on May 1st. 

 

5. What steps do I need to complete to finalize my enrollment? 

Step 1: Complete your profile 

Step 2: Choose your benefit selections 

Step 3: Submit your request 

Step 4: Complete your I-9 and W-4 verifications 

Step 5: Sign your new hire packet 

 

Afterward, you’ll receive a welcome email with your enrollment guide. 

 

6. Why is Form I-9 required? 

All U.S. employers are required to complete Form I-9 to verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired to work in the United States. 

 

7. Can I make changes to my benefits after enrolling? 

Changes are allowed before application submission, during open enrollment, or if you experience a qualifying life event. 

 

8. When is the annual review of this plan for rate changes?  

The plan's performance is reviewed every June and rates are adjusted accordingly. 

 

9. When do deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums reset? 

All major medical plan deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums reset on January 1st of each year. 

 

10. Can my family access any services? 

Yes, you may add family members to most benefits. Telehealth services include coverage for your family at no extra cost. 

 

11. Which network are the health benefits associated with? 

All major medical plans use the Cigna PPO Network. 

 

12. What qualifies as a life event, and what should I do if one occurs? 

Call our support team within 30 days of the event to make changes. Examples and required documentation include: 

Birth/adoption → Birth certificate or adoption record 

Marriage → Marriage certificate 

Divorce → Court documentation 

Relocation → Proof of new residency

13. Can I cancel my benefits at any time? 

Yes. You may end your association with 1099 Workers at any time by submitting written notice to [email protected]. Your benefits will remain active throughout the remainder of the month. 

 

14. I have one employee; how do I cover them? 

If you have one employee and do not offer a separate group health plan, your employee may enroll individually. Premiums will be billed directly to the employee at the individual enrollee level.
